🇵🇭 Philippinische Sprache 🇩🇪 Pinulongan sa Alemanya 🇵🇭 A Philippine language

Willkommen!

Welcome!

This program teaches you Bisaya (Cebuano) — the language spoken in Cebu, Davao and much of the Visayas and Mindanao. The approach is inspired by the ideas of Vera F. Birkenbihl: no memorizing grammar rules, but instead decode, understand, absorb, and then use it in real life.

The goal isn't "knowing the grammar" — it's actually being able to use the language, in conversation, while traveling, with friends.

Maayong pag-abot!

Beispiel: Unsa imong ngalan? → wörtlich "Was dein Name?" → natürlich "Wie heißt du?"

2. Aktives Hören / Aktives Lesen

Lies den Bisaya-Text laut mit, während du die Dekodierung mitliest — so verknüpfst du Klang, Wortfolge und Bedeutung gleichzeitig, ohne grammatikalisch "nachzudenken". Sprich die Lautschrift laut mit. Wiederhole jede Lektion 3–5 Mal an aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen.

Vorgeschlagener Wochenrhythmus

Tag 1–2: Neue Lektion dekodieren + laut lesen. Tag 3–4: Wortschatz-Karteikarten der Lektion üben. Tag 5: Anwenden-Übungen zur Lektion. Tag 6–7: Passives Hören mit eigenem Audiomaterial + eine alte Lektion wiederholen. Dann weiter zur nächsten Lektion — bei 19 Lektionen bist du in ca. 19 Wochen durch das gesamte Modul, mit stetig wachsendem, wirklich verfügbarem Wortschatz.

Our learning method — inspired by the Birkenbihl idea, adapted for Bisaya

Vera F. Birkenbihl's idea rests on four steps, which we use here as inspiration and adapt for Bisaya. Since this is text-based (no built-in audio), the steps are slightly adjusted — it's best to bring your own listening material alongside it (e.g. Cebuano podcasts, YouTube videos with native speakers, music).

1. Decode (don't translate!)

Every Bisaya sentence is decoded word for word into rough, literal English — not pretty, but honest. This way you see how Bisaya really "thinks" and works, instead of just memorizing a nice translation. Only after that comes the natural translation. You'll find exactly this in every lesson.

Example: Unsa imong ngalan? → literally "What your name?" → naturally "What's your name?"

2. Active Listening / Active Reading

Read the Bisaya text aloud while reading along with the decoding — that way you connect sound, word order and meaning at the same time, without "thinking" grammatically. Say the pronunciation guide out loud too. Repeat each lesson 3–5 times on consecutive days.

3. Passive Listening

Let Bisaya play in the background while you do something else (cooking, driving, tidying up) — without actively listening. Your brain keeps working on sound patterns unconsciously. Find your own audio material for this (e.g. Cebuano radio, podcasts, Sinulog vlogs); this app is deliberately built so you can easily use your own audio sources alongside it.

4. Active Use — the real goal

Decoding and listening are just preparation. The language only comes alive once you use it: building your own sentences, answering questions, talking to real people. That's what the "Practice" section is for — with chunking exercises (combining building blocks) and free writing/speaking tasks.

Suggested weekly rhythm

Days 1–2: decode the new lesson + read it aloud. Days 3–4: practice the lesson's vocabulary flashcards. Day 5: do the practice exercises for the lesson. Days 6–7: passive listening with your own audio material + review an older lesson. Then move on to the next lesson — with 19 lessons, you'll get through the whole module in about 19 weeks, with a steadily growing, genuinely usable vocabulary.

Among Pamaagi sa Pagtuon — dinasig sa ideya ni Birkenbihl

Ang ideya ni Vera F. Birkenbihl adunay upat ka lakang, nga among gigamit dinhi isip inspirasyon alang sa pagkat-on og German:

Click the card to see the translation. Then honestly mark whether you already know the word — your progress is saved locally on this device. Use 🎤 to check your own pronunciation directly with the microphone (your browser will ask for mic access once; no browser directly supports Cebuano, so this is a best-effort approximation via the related Filipino speech recognition — not a substitute for real feedback from native speakers). Note: the microphone check works reliably in Chrome; Safari (even on Mac) doesn't support this feature yet — but 🔊 for listening still works there.

Phrases — Everyday Sentences, Idioms & Slang

Over 200 extra expressions from real everyday Bisaya: practical sentences for getting around, vivid idioms and proverbs (panultihon) with their literal meaning, and youth slang as it's actually spoken in Cebu today. All entries are also available as flashcards in the Vocabulary Trainer (categories "Everyday Phrases", "Idioms", "Slang & Youth Language").

Bau eigene Sätze, beantworte Szenarien in eigenen Worten. Es gibt keine "Korrektur" durch das Programm — vergleiche deine Antwort einfach ehrlich mit dem Beispiel und feile weiter. Sprich deine Antwort laut aus, bevor du sie aufschreibst.

Practice — this is where it comes alive

The most important part. Build your own sentences, answer scenarios in your own words. There's no "correction" from the app — just honestly compare your answer with the example and keep refining. Say your answer out loud before you write it down.

Giya sa Gramatika sa German — moabot pa

Ang kompleto nga giya sa gramatika sa German (mga artikulo der/die/das, mga kaso, pag-conjugate sa verbo) nga gipatin-aw sa Bisaya gi-andam pa alang sa sunod nga update, aron masiguro ang kaayo nga pagkasakto. Sa pagkakaron, gamita ang Mga Leksyon ug Mga Sugilanon aron makat-on sa German pinaagi sa tinuod nga mga pananglitan.

Aussprache

Pronunciation

Bisaya is written very phonetically — what you read is what you say. Five clear vowels: a as in "father", e as in "bet", i as in "machine", o as in "so", u as in "rule". Each vowel is pronounced separately, even when two sit next to each other (e.g. maayo = ma-a-yo).

The glottal stop (a brief catch in the voice, like the pause in "uh-oh") often appears between two vowels, e.g. in pag-atiman or bag-o — usually marked with a hyphen in the text.

Word stress usually falls on the second-to-last syllable (e.g. tu-LOG = to sleep). In this app's pronunciation guides, the stressed syllable is written in CAPITALS.

ng is pronounced like in English "sing" — even at the start of a word, e.g. ngano (why), which takes some getting used to. The r is a short single tap of the tongue, not rolled like in Spanish.

🔊 The small speaker icons next to the pronunciation guide use your device's built-in text-to-speech (Web Speech API) — there's no real Cebuano voice, so this is only an approximation (usually via a Filipino/Spanish voice, or an English voice as fallback). For real pronunciation, also rely on genuine listening material from native speakers (see "Method" → Passive Listening).

Pronomen-Tabelle

Bisaya-Pronomen erscheinen in drei Formen: als Subjekt (Set 1), als angehängte Kurzform bzw. Objekt (Set 2) und als Possessivform vor einem Nomen (Set 3).

DeutschSet 1 (Subjekt)Set 2 (Objekt/kurz)Set 3 (besitzanzeigend)
ichakoko / nakoakong (mein)
duikawka / nimoimong (dein)
er/sie/essiyaniyaiyang (sein/ihr)
wir (inkl. Zuhörer)kitata / natoatong (unser)
wir (ohne Zuhörer)kaminamoamong (unser)
ihrkamoninyo / moinyong (euer)
sie (Plural)silanilailang (ihr, Pl.)
Bisaya unterscheidet zwei Formen von "wir": kita schließt die angesprochene Person mit ein ("wir beide"), kami schließt sie aus ("wir, aber nicht du"). Das gibt es im Deutschen nicht — ein gutes Beispiel dafür, warum reines Übersetzen die Sprache verfälscht.

Pronoun Table

Bisaya pronouns come in three forms: as subject (Set 1), as an attached short/object form (Set 2), and as a possessive before a noun (Set 3).

EnglishSet 1 (subject)Set 2 (object/short)Set 3 (possessive)
Iakoko / nakoakong (my)
you (sg.)ikawka / nimoimong (your)
he/she/itsiyaniyaiyang (his/her)
we (incl. listener)kitata / natoatong (our)
we (excl. listener)kaminamoamong (our)
you (pl.)kamoninyo / moinyong (your, pl.)
theysilanilailang (their)
Bisaya distinguishes two forms of "we": kita includes the person you're speaking to ("the two/all of us"), kami excludes them ("us, but not you"). English doesn't have this distinction — a good example of why plain translation can distort a language.

Funktionswörter-Spickzettel

Diese kleinen Wörter tauchen ständig auf und tragen die Satzmelodie — wichtiger als viele "große" Wörter.

Function Word Cheat Sheet

These little words show up constantly and carry the sentence's melody — more important than many "big" words.

The Verb Focus System (briefly explained)

Bisaya verbs show not only when something happens, but also what the sentence is focused on — the person doing the action (actor focus) or the thing receiving the action (object focus). This takes getting used to for English speakers, but don't worry: the actor-focus forms are perfectly fine for everyday communication.

PrefixMeaningExample
mo- / mu-future (one-time) actionmokaon = will eat
mi- / ni-completed action (past)mikaon = ate
nag- / mag-ongoing/habitual actionnagkaon = is eating
gi-object focus, completed ("... was eaten by me")gikaon nako = I ate it

You'll pick up these patterns fastest by reading the lesson dialogues aloud and simply "absorbing" the forms — not by memorizing them.

💛 Special Thanks

Vielen Dank an unseren Beta-Tester Albert Bulala!

Maayong pagpasalamat, Albert — daghang salamat!

Daghang salamat, Albert!
